Sternschanze
The name "Sternschanze" or "Schanzenviertel" originates from a fortification that was built there in the 17th century. In the first decades of the 19th century, the Schanze used to be a workers’ quarter. Later, from the 1970s, it was a home for students and artisans. At the end of the century, the process of gentrification began, when start-ups rented a lot of office space in the Sternschanze. Today, it’s mainly a playground for hipsters who roam the cafes and cool shops – and for tourists.
